Details about the Artist and Project

Madeleine Segall-Marx recently received a Dutchess County Arts Council grant in collaboration with the Hyde Park Library, and graciously has opened her studio/barn to the community as a 2008 fund raiser.

Ms. Segall-Marx has been interested in the fact that around the world people have been involved in armed conflict from time immemorial. We humans easily accept the notion that we have, or may have enemies. The artist looks into what makes us willing or ready to identify an adversary, and to kill him.

"The Singing Bowl: Tales from the Enemy" is a combination of personal stories that have been written for this project from people around the world who have been caught in armed conflict. The artist is in her fifth year of the project and expects to complete it within the next two years. Each story generates a visual art work in either two of three dimensions. The project represents, by two pathways, the voices of people who may be considered "the enemy" somewhere in the world: by the words of the storytellers, and by the visual interpretation of the artist.

Visual interpretation of each source is not illustrative, but rather relies in part on a universal necessity: food. The artist uses a recipe from the country of origin of each storyteller to inspire each visual work. The result is a diverse visual and material array of mostly large works, sculptures, as well as wall pieces, each singularly representing the voice of someone's "enemy." The stories will be assembled as a book, to accompany the exhibition of works when the project is complete.

Madeleine Segall-Marx is a figuratively trained sculptor whose work includes cast bronze, stone and a variety of mixed media. She has made three public works in the City of New York, and her sculpture has won over 40 awards, including 10 first place awards and Medals of Honor. She has worked as a curator and instructor of sculpture, and in her former role as President of the National Assoc. of Women Artists, she initiated several partnerships and programs between NAWA and other organizations, such as UNIFEM, resulting in an exhibition of 400 miniature works at the UN. She was the recipient of the Dutchess County Executive Arts Award to an individual artist in 2006. Currently she works in her studios in New York City, Hyde Park, NY, and Pietrasanta, Italy. Her current project has been supported by the Puffin Foundation and the Dutchess County Arts Council and NY State Council on the Arts.
